Preparing for the First Advisor Meeting

Posted almost 3 years ago  in First Year Families.

Important Steps: Prepare for First-Year Advisor Meetings During Hawk Welcome
Students will meet with a First-Year Advisor to create their fall schedule during their Hawk Welcome Program. Here are important steps they need to complete before this meeting at their earliest convenience:

1. Sign up for their Hawk Welcome and Advising Day at monmouth.edu/applicantportal. (Families are invited to attend Family Orientation while the students are attending their Hawk Welcome and Advising Day.) NOTE: Date options will depend on the student's major.
2. Send AP or College Credits Students should send official advanced placement scores report and/or college transcripts to the Monmouth University Admission Office prior to their Hawk Welcome and Advising Day for evaluation. Questions? Email admission@monmouth.edu.
3. Activate their student account Students can find their Monmouth student ID and username on their applicant portal at monmouth.edu/applicantportal. If they have not already done so, they can call the account activation and password reset line, 732-923-4600.
4. Complete “SOAR” A series of online modules for the Class of 2026 where students will find information on academic course requirements, major and career options, and more. To find SOAR, students can log into myMU (Monmouth University’s student portal) at my.monmouth.edu and then choose eC@mpus (use the student ID information mentioned above). SOAR will be listed in the My Courses area of your eC@mpus page. Questions about SOAR? Email fyadvisor@monmouth.edu.
5. Take the Mathematics Placement Assessment on SOAR no later than one week prior to their Hawk Welcome Day. Once in SOAR, the Math Placement exam will be located under the “Advising Information” module. The Mathematics Placement is given in order to place your student in the appropriate mathematics course during the advising appointment. Students cannot register for any courses until they have taken this assessment. It should take about an hour to complete the Math Placement Assessment and students will need their Monmouth University student ID number and password to log in. Questions? Email mathplacement@monmouth.edu.
6. Complete the World Languages Placement Module on SOAR. All Monmouth University students are required to take a three-credit world language course at Monmouth as part of the General Education Requirements. This SOAR module will ask students to complete a brief language survey and (possibly) a language placement exam to ensure that they will take the correct language class for their level. Once in SOAR, students should choose Course Materials, and Begin Here; scroll down to World Languages Placement. Questions? Email the World Languages Coordinator, Dr. Julia Riordan-Goncalves, at WL@monmouth.edu.
7. Students with a disability seeking accommodations should contact The Department of Disability Services (DDS) at dds@monmouth.edu and complete the Confidential Registration Form to activate a file. DDS will be in contact to explain the registration process. Students requesting testing accommodations for the online Mathematics Placement Assessment, housing, and/or meal plan accommodations for the fall semester must contact DDS as soon as possible. Please note that accommodations are unique to each individual student's needs and cannot be guaranteed.

If your student has questions about First Year Advising, please have them contact us at fyadvisor@monmouth.edu or 732-263-5868 during normal business hours.
